Apprenticeship
Jazz, blues and other roots musics were traditionally learned through an apprenticeship process, rather than by private lessons taught in the master/student model. Musicians would immerse themselves in live music situations – listening, observing and getting whatever information they could from more experienced players. The next step of the educational process came when musicians were ready to learn on the bandstand by performing with more accomplished musicians.
Roots Motion recognizes the ongoing importance of creating and supporting an environment where developing musicians can learn by observation and participation. Our concerts and jam sessions give musicians of all levels the opportunity to interact with and eventually perform with each other, essentially a passing of the torch from one generation to the next.
Workshops & Masterclasses
An important part of today’s education in jazz is the workshop and masterclass formats. Though jazz has spread to all corners of the globe, especially with the help of the internet, the presence of experienced jazz masters is rare in much of the world. Today there is also less opportunity for live music than in the past, making direct contact with masters through workshops and masterclasses essential for many aspiring musicians. For this reason, Roots Motion makes great efforts to present workshops and masterclasses with master musicians
In addition to creating performance opportunities for them.
Roots Motion has presented workshops with a range of world class masters including: Pianist Dr. Barry Harris, Saxophonist Grant Stewart, Guitarist Peter Bernstein and Drummers Ari Hoenig, Bill Stewart and Jason Marsalis.
Private Lessons
Roots Motion can connect students of all levels and all instruments with

Courses are done in lecture style, and when possible they combined with live performances that help musically illustrate the material covered.
